Silver City, NM
April 25 - May 2
The main reason we wanted to come to the Silver City area of NM is for Gila National Forest and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Upon researching the area we also would like to see the Gila Catwalk, City of Rocks State Park and the Boston Hill Open Space to ride our bikes. We’ll be staying a week in this area and are looking to explore Silver City as well.
The RV park we choose is Manzano’s RV Park, on the outskirts of the downtown area of Silver City. Manzano’s RV Park is surrounded by pinion, juniper and oak trees. The elevation of the park is 5,900 feet. The park is a short, 5-minute drive to the historic downtown Silver City.
Nestled against the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest, Silver City is a quirky cultural town of just over 10,000 people. Boasting historical ties with Billy the Kid, the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and Geronimo, as well as the third largest open pit copper mine in the world, Silver City shines in its artistic, culinary, and historical offerings. The downtown Historic District in particular is home to more than a dozen restaurants, murals, and some thirty-plus galleries and artist studios. At 6,000 feet, the summer monsoons enliven the lush landscape and provide an escape from the typical Southwestern heat. The Silver City climate is noted for its clear mountain air, low humidity and four gentle seasons. The bulk of Grant County and most of the towns in the county, including Silver City, fall into a high, arid region that resembles both parts of Arizona’s Chihuahuan Desert and New Mexico’s famously beautiful Ponderosa-clad mountains.
